Cartoneras: South American cardboard book making workshop for Latino youth

A cardboard book movement that started in Latin America is being explored in a free presentation and workshop at the British Library on Friday 17 May, writes Josh Mellor…

Cartoneras is a book making style that uses photocopied pages and hand-painted recycled cardboard covers that originates from Argentina.

The event is aimed at Southwark and Lambeth based 13-19 year olds from the Latin American community and will begin with a presentation by academic and researcher Lucy Bell followed by a cartoneras making workshop.

The word ‘cartonera’ comes from the Spanish ‘cartoneros’ which means cardboarders, a reference to the waste pickers who made a living recycling cardboard after the 2001 Argentinian economic crisis.

The British Museum also holds a collection of cartoneras which will be available to view at the event.

It takes place between 3-5pm on Friday 17 May, to book and for more information visit: https://www.bl.uk/events/cartonera-latin-american-cardboard-books
