Buddhist inspired cookbook comes to Elephant and Castle, thanks to LCC students and Café Jamyang

A Buddhist-inspired cookbook has been created by students and staff from London College of Communication for the London Design Festival, writes Nora Selina Helal…

The launch event held on September 27th at the Atrium Gallery, and part of the LCC’s series ‘Everything Happens So much’, showcased an exhibition of the behind-the-scenes making of the ‘Elephant’s Secret Kitchen’ cookbook.

The evening included information on the making of the book, and demonstrations of how kitchen waste and plant matter were used to dye the bookmarks, producing over 40 different shades of colours.

Jaya Modi, MA student studying Graphic Media Design, said: “I genuinely loved the evening meetings with Rahel, Flo, Azelia and Pietro at Jamyang.

“They were always so fun and heart-warming.

“I found the concept of the book very beautiful, the way it sought to bring people together, in both its creation and its recipes.

“As a student, I simply love the re-birth section. It gave me quite a few quirky ideas to save those bits of food in the fridge, and yet be able to relish them without complaint or constraint.”

Guests had the opportunity to meet with participants involved in the project – which was initiated by LCC’s technical staff Florence Hawkins and Rachel Zoller, Ilaria Messogori from the Jamyang Café and included students from LLC’s schools of Design, Media and Screen.

Filled with flavour, the cookbook, was collaboratively produced with the Café at Jamyang in Elephant and Castle.

Ilaria Mezzogori, Chef at Jamyang cafe, said: “It was almost natural for us to ask LCC to collaborate with us on this book.

“The students that took part were incredible with their creativity, professionalism, passion and determination.

“We’ve learnt a lot from them and I’m very proud to have got to know this incredible group of artists and designers.”
