Innocent woman shot in leg during fight in Rotherhithe New Road

A woman was shot in the leg after getting caught in the middle of a fight in Rotherhithe New Road on Saturday afternoon.

The 38-year-old was described as ‘an innocent member of the public’ by police, who are appealing for witnesses.

Two men – one armed with a gun and the other with a broom – were involved in an altercation outside a barber’s shop.

The argument escalated and the woman, who appears to have been a passer-by in the wrong place at the wrong time, suffered a gunshot wound in the leg.

Police were called at around 3pm to reports of a shot fired. They found the victim, who was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Southwark residents took to social media to express their shock.

One man said: “I grew up on this road – so happy I’ve moved away. No matter how much I miss it, it’s reading stuff like this that helps me stay away.”

Another said: “Not a nice environment for anyone especially children. Glad I’m moving in July. Scary round here.”

No arrests have been made and officers from the Met Police’s Trident Gang Command unit are investigating.

Anyone with information should call Trident officers on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
