Ten years in prison for teen whose stab victim will need ‘full-time care for the rest of his life’

A seventeen-year-old boy has been jailed for ten years after pleading guilty to a ‘horrific assault’ that left his victim needing round-the-clock care for the rest of his life.

The Met confirmed that the teenage boy, whose identity cannot be revealed for legal reasons, was sentenced yesterday (Friday, September 28) at Blackfriars Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent.

His victim, Dwayne Kevin Buchanan, was found by police on Kennington Road after reports of a stabbing, on Friday, March 23.

The 30-year-old, originally from Birmingham, was living in Kennington at the time of the attack.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital in a critical condition, where he was given heart surgery.

Mr Buchanan suffered a ‘serious brain injury’, and stayed in hospital for four months before he was transferred to a rehabilitation centre.

Tragically, he will need full-time care for the rest of his life as a result of his injuries.

His attacker will now spend ten years behind bars and a further five years on licence.

Detective Constable Philip Boon, from Lambeth CID, said: “Dwayne was subjected to a horrific assault and it was only thanks to the outstanding efforts of medical staff on the scene that he survived.

“His injuries will affect him and his family and friends for the rest of their lives.

“Those who carry knives must face the consequences of their actions and we will continue to relentlessly pursue offenders intent on committing serious violence in the capital.”
