Chino Johnson: police renew appeals for witnesses a week on from ‘shocking’ moped murder

Police have called again for help one week on from a ‘shocking’ murder in south London.

Chino Johnson, 27. was shot to death in Ferrey Mews in Brixton on Sunday (September 12) at about 9pm. Two women, aged 29 and 26, were also wounded and treated in hospital.

On Sunday evening (September 19) from around 8pm officers were in the area around Ferrey Mews to carry out their appeal with local people.

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Leonard, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command who leads the investigation, said on Sunday (September 19): “It is one week since Chino was fatally injured as a result of this shooting, which will have understandably caused shock and concern in the local community.

“Those responsible need to be identified and held to account for their actions and I would appeal to anyone who has information that could assist, no matter how small or insignificant they think this is, to contact my team in confidence.

“If you do not wish to speak to police, you can also provide information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers.”

Mr Johnson was socialising with friends outside the property in Ferrey Mews when two suspects rode up on a light-coloured moped and opened fire on the group. Mr Johnson was among the people wounded, alongside the two women.

The pair then fled on the moped eastwards in the direction of Bennett Road and Dora Way.

Mr Johnson was treated by London Ambulance Service crews but died soon afterwards, while the 29-year-old woman was taken to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. The second woman later took herself to hospital with minor injuries.

Police are particularly interested in the light coloured moped, which is either white or silver and has a large black square box mounted on the rear and an L plate hanging down. Officers said it is either a Yamaha NX or a model that looks similar.

Anyone with footage that could assist can upload it here.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information about the moped or any other aspect of Chino’s murder can call the incident room on 020 8721 4622 or tweet @MetCC, giving the reference 7163/12SEP.
