‘Over 100’ youths gathered on Jamaica Road late at night on Tuesday, May 31 “screaming” and “kicking” cars before being dispersed by police.
Police were called shortly after 10pm to the busy Bermondsey road following reports of a large number of youths and anti-social behaviour.
Nick Sellers, an eyewitness, said: “I got home to see a lot of youths congregating on the street near Bermondsey Underground, where I live opposite.
“There was a lot of confusion and panic amongst them, but I couldn’t make out what they were saying.
“A couple of them ran into surrounding streets behind the Underground station across the road from our flat.
“I go into the shops in the street quite regularly but I’ve never seen that. Quite frightening really. I just can’t understand why so many of them were hanging around in the first place.
“We’re not talking a small group, we’re talking at least 100 people if not more.”

It is not yet clear why the large number of youths came to the area.
Ana Duarte, another eyewitness, said: “I’m not quite sure why everyone was here on the first place. There were hundreds of teenagers.
“They were just screaming and in the middle of the road for about 30min before police came. They kicked some cars and a bus.
“All very nuts. And I just wonder where the parents of these kids were? As almost all of them looked under eighteen.”
The police have told the News that no arrests have been made and that enquires are ongoing.
