Cops on the hunt for the Elephant and Castle jewellery snatchers

Police are hunting for two men after a series of “sickening” robberies of vulnerable people around the Elephant & Castle area.

Pensioners and women with their young children have been targeted in the vile attacks, which took place throughout last month.

The first robbery took place in Tiverton Street, Elephant and Castle at 4pm on September 7. A 46-year-old woman was grabbed from behind by the suspects while she was walking with her young son. The men snatched a gold necklace with a heart pendant from her neck and fled.

The second incident took place that same day at around 6pm on Olney Road, Kennington. This time the victim was an elderly woman aged 70, who was walking home alone when she was grabbed from behind. The suspects grabbed a gold chain before pushing her to the floor.

Two days later at 1pm in Sturgeon Close, Kennington, another mother who was walking with her young son was attacked. The 37-year-old had her mobile phone snatched from her hand, before the suspects grabbed a gold chain from around her neck.

An 85-year-old woman was targeted in the final robbery, which took place on September 29 at approximately 12.15pm in Andrews Walk, Kennington. The victim was grabbed from behind by her face and had her gold chain snatched from around her neck.

None of the victims were seriously injured in the robberies, described as “sickening” by Detective Constable Sefan Yiannaki of Southwark CID.

He said: “This is a sickening series of robberies of vulnerable victims. I would urge anyone who has information about the two males involved, or who can help assist with our investigation, to call police. All calls will be treated in the strictest confidence.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via 101.
