Commuters battle traffic chaos

Commuters once again got stuck in traffic gridlock this week, with the Kennington water main burst compacting already busy traffic across the north-west of the borough.

Elephant and Castle roundabout was at a standstill for much of Monday and Tuesday, with dozens of buses struggling to cross the roundabout, many of them empty after passengers realised it was quicker to walk.

As well as that, several emergency services vehicles were spotted trapped in the traffic quagmire, with one commentator on social media claiming to have seen “three stuck ambulances with sirens on.”

Another person claimed that “Elephant and Castle has turned into London’s most complicated car park this morning” while another added “first time I’ve seen twelve buses stuck behind each other.”

A spokesperson for Transport for London said: “The water main burst in Kennington meant that Kennington Park Road was closed. This had a knock-on effect and we saw congestion in Elephant and Castle.”

He added:?“Three bus routes were diverted away to help ease the problem, routes number 3, 59 and 159.”
