Flat Iron Square: Party planned to celebrate life of murdered MP Jo Cox

Borough is hosting a big outdoor party next Sunday (August 1) as part of an annual celebration of the life of murdered MP Jo Cox.

The event, which is taking place in Flat Iron Square on Union Street, is being organised by local community group Living Bankside.

The theme of this year’s event is ‘getting our community back together’ after the government COVID-19 restrictions eased this week.

Amir Eden, who runs Living Bankside, said: “As we emerge from lockdown restrictions, many in our community were keen to see the return of The Great Get Together Bankside.

“At Living Bankside we are excited to take on the mantle to host this event, which is inspired by the life and values of the late Jo Cox MP.

“Given the state of the world, this year’s event will be a scaled-back, slimmed-down affair but it will include many of the fun elements from previous years and some new twists. Come along, catch up with old friends, make some new ones – but remember to follow the latest health advice.”

The start of the event will coincide with the arrival of over 60 people who will have cycled from Ms Cox’s former constituency of Batley and Spen in Yorkshire. The riders will help launch this year’s Great Get Together.

The event will feature the  Bankside “Bark-Off”, a dog show with the BBC’s Anna Webb; Bake-Off; Wacky Races; an array of music, street performances, creative installations, children’s activities and stalls from community groups.

The event will be officially opened by a mystery guest, who Living Bankside say “has made a big impression in the last year”.
