Fourth generation takes the helm at popular traditional pie and mash shop

Popular traditional pie and mash shop,  Manze’s, will have a new generation minding the business as two of the businesses’ stalwarts have retired.

The family-run business, established in 1902, has been handed down through the generations, with Rick, the founder’s grandson, being involved with the shop for forty years.

Now, after his two brothers have retired, his daughter Emma and her husband Tom are joining the traditional outlet, which has two shops in the borough.

“I’ve worked with my two brothers all my life but now they are retiring I’m pleased that the family dynasty will carry on with my daughter and eventually grandchildren,” said Rick.

“It’s both a sad and happy time for me with my two older brothers retiring and my daughter and son-in-law taking over their part of the business.”

Emma and Tom are going to bring “fresh eyes and enthusiasm” to the business, while still staying true to the successful recipe that has served the business well since the 1900s.

Among the proposed changes are a local delivery service through Deliveroo – and expanding their overnight delivery service so anyone in the country can buy Manze’s Pie and Mash.

Emma said: “I am so proud of the fantastic legacy that my family have built over the past 117 years, I feel so privileged and honoured to play a part in the future of the business.

“We are expecting baby number two at the end of summer and what a fantastic family tradition for them to be apart of, fifth generation in the making.”

“I’m so excited to be part of a business that is steeped in history,” Tom added.

“Manze’s has provided a great value traditional meal for over 100 years and we want to make sure it does so for another 100 years.”

  1. I live in Christchurch in Dorset and I do order from Manze’s. The service is excellent and the food is all well packed and boxed up. I am due to order again.
I grew up in Peckham and mum always got pie and liquor every Saturday from Hill Street shop. She travelled there and back on the bus. I’m talking in 60’s.
