Denmark Hill Co-op helps raise more than £10k for Camberwell childcare charity

The Co-op on Denmark Hill presented a cheque for £10,562.35 to the Camberwell After School Project (CASP) this week to help fund childcare.

CASP helps parents who are working or studying by providing out of school childcare.

The charity has worked in Camberwell for 33 years and currently works with 80 children every week.

Most are from low-income families who struggle with the cost of private nurseries or childminders or may not have family to help them.

The charity says since 2012 its funding from Southwark Council has ‘significantly reduced’ due to cuts.

It now needs to raise £30,000 by March next year to meet a shortfall in its yearly budget.

Chief executive, Carmen Lindsay MBE, thanked the Co-op and its members for their amazing efforts.

She said since the charity was founded it has helped more than 5,000 children and 3,000 parents and carers.

“This practical support allows parents and carers to secure and sustain employment or access education and training, helping them to escape the cycle of poverty,” she said.

“CASP provides our parents, with peace and a sound mind knowing their child is being looked after and not roaming the streets unsupervised.

“This is what makes CASP a survival line for many of our users.”
