Arise sir Simon Hughes

Former MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Simon Hughes, is to be knighted and a Southwark charity leader is to receive an OBE, according to the Queen’s birthday honours list.

When the names of those to receive honours were announced yesterday, Mr Hughes said it was a “great surprise” to see he was to recieve a knighthood.

Simon Hughes said: “It is very humbling to be in the company of such clearly worthy individuals,” he told the News.

“I just want to thank the people of Bermondsey and Southwark. They put their trust in me as their member of parliament for more than 32 years and for that I am truly grateful.

“This honour is a testament to the hard work of so many different people and belongs as much to them as to me,” he added.

Jimmy Jukes, founder of Rotherhithe-based, Homes4Heroes – set up to house and support ex-service personnel, is to be awareded an OBE, which he said he hoped would raise the profile of the charity.

For a full account of those awarded honours in the borough, see the Southwark News on Thursday.

  1. Congratulations Simon, I never knew anyone who deserved it more! You did wonderful things for me and my family for the 12 years we lived here with you as our MP. We appreciate you!
