New flags celebrate rebellious spirit of Bankside

Newly-designed flags will fly at Borough Market to celebrate the rebellious spirit of Bankside.

The 60 flags, designed by 40 artists and designers, is part of the London Design Festival, and will fly at Borough Market’s Jubilee Place from September 15-23.

The display features designs from Morag Myerscough, typographer and printmaker Alan Kitching and illustrator Alice Bowsher.

The flag, designed by Alice Bowsher, aims to capture the counter-cultural spirit of the area

After being displayed, they will be auctioned off in support of local community projects.

Nicole Gordon, CEO of Better Bankside, which aims to make the area a better place to live and work, said: “This is a powerful display of Bankside’s othernesses, a colourful celebration of the area’s creative and chaotic spirit.

“We are delighted that so many artists and designers have been inspired by Bankside’s rich and intriguing history to bring an intense display of colour to Borough Market.”

Bankside has long been established as London’s cultural district with the famous Borough Market and Tate Modern at its heart.

It has also played host to many of London’s ‘outsiders’, a spirit which the flag designs are hoping to commemorate.

The London design festival, established in 2003, aims to be the artistic equivalent of London fashion week.

It sees world-renowned artists, designers and educators come to Bankside to exhibit and promote their work.
