Southwark construction skills centre moves to Rotherhithe

Southwark’s construction skills centre has moved to Rotherhithe from Elephant and Castle.

The new centre, in Hawker House near Canada Water station, will continue to give people opportunities in the building industry in the borough and around south-east London.

The area is home to one of the biggest building projects in London, British Land’s controversial Canada Water masterplan, as well as several other big building projects. At an opening ceremony on Thursday (January 6), council leader Kieron Williams said he hoped local residents would reap the benefits of the centre.

Southwark council leader Cllr Kieron Williams said: “I was delighted to celebrate a new chapter for Southwark Construction Skills Centre bang in the centre of one of London’s largest development sites.

“We need to make sure our residents have the best opportunities to make the most of the benefits this work brings, especially job creation. I look forward to seeing the centre continuing to build on its brilliant success at supporting residents into training and jobs within the construction industry.”

The Southwark Construction Skills Centre was set up five years ago in Elephant and Castle, and has trained more than 10,000 people and helped create more than 3,000 building jobs.
