Christmas by the River

Christmas by the River, the street food and Christmas gift market at London Bridge City, has just about everything you need for a stroll along the Thames with the added option of eating, drinking, buying a gift, or listening to a live DJ set in the comfort of the Riverside Lodge, writes Michael Holland.

This is a beautiful part of the river with the lights from the More London office buildings, the sights of HMS Belfast, Tower Bridge and the City and the Tower of London on the other side. Added to the aromas of food from just about every continent wafting through the crowd and it is almost impossible not to indulge.

And indulge we did, starting with a mulled wine and a prawn and noodle dish that we took into the Lodge to eat while enjoying the music.

After a while, we once again sauntered along the row of cabins offering mouth-watering dishes before choosing the Bratwurst and chips. With this German delicacy, I needed a European beer so had a Pravda lager. My companion relished the earlier mulled wine so had another.

The DJ was now playing some fantastic funk, with the 12” version of Roy Ayers’ Running Away getting a few people up to bust some moves, and me doing my legendary Seat Dance.

After working up another appetite we took to the street again and came back with something from the Lebanon, plus a sweet and sour chicken and rice delight, and a delicacy from Japan to accompany the red wine we were now consuming.

More dancing ensued in the Riverside Lodge, followed by Chocolate Kisses, waffles and maple syrup, and more wine, and now Christmas had well and truly begun. I even bought a new angel for the tree.

If you’re stuck for something to do in that Chrimbo Limbo between Boxing Day and Old Year’s Night then treat yourself to a walk along the Christmas by the River market.

I’m going back for more of the Panko Prawns…
